A little handstitching on a roadtrip to Mitchell Oregon and the Painted Hills

 

Just WOW!!! The Painted Hills are so amazing, but I am getting ahead of myself, so we will start at the beginning!!!

I had a week off from work so we decided to do a short road trip to discover Oregon.

Our first stop was Smith Rock State Park.

Another WOWZA for sure. I had never been in there and I was not disappointed from the views.

This is a place where many people gather to go rock climbing. There were tons of people in the park the day we were there. Someday I hope to go back with more time on our hands so we can go hike the easy  trails.

Then on to Mitchell and The Little Pine Lodge.!!!

Three bedrooms, one large bathroom, a little kitchen and very expansive living room with a huge flat screen TV and wood stove.

The entire upper floor is ours!!!!

Downstairs is a sweet little souvenir shop run by Dajuana and Mickey.

We took the larger bedroom, very comfy bed and a door to the veranda!!!

I did get some hand sewing done in the mornings!!!! Always good to bring a little something to work on while traveling.

Cocktails on the veranda. My husband LOVES scanning the hillside for animals. You don't need to look far as the deer and turkey come right into town.

The Painted Hills are 11.5 miles from Mitchell. They are part of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument.

One Park, Three Units

John Day Fossil Beds National Monument consists of three units: Sheep Rock, Painted Hills, and Clarno. These three locations are dispersed through east-central Oregon. Because of the winding roads, visiting all three units is difficult to do in a single day, but is possible with an early start. The amount of time available and the route of travel taken are often the determining factors on which units you're able to visit.

Distances & Drive Time Between Units

Sheep Rock to Painted Hills - 45 miles (1 hour)

Painted Hills Unit to Clarno Unit - 75 miles (1.5 hours)

Clarno Unit to Sheep Rock Unit - 81 miles (2 hours)

We decided to just do the Painted Hills this trip and save the other two when we can spend more time there. I think we spent a good 3 hours in the park driving and walking the easy hikes.

It was a really great adventure!!! If you ever have the chance to visit, be sure to check these places out and stay at Little Pine Lodge in Mitchell Oregon.

Back in Mitchell you will find a store with everything under the sun for sale, groceries, automotive, tools, you name it, they probably have it!!!

There is also a pastry shop and Tiger Town Micro Brew for lunch or dinner.

There is also a restaurant on the highway. Check days and times for when they are all open.

There is also a sweet little 2nd hand shop called Judy's Place owned and run by Judy!! Lots of treasures in there!!!

On the way home we stopped in Sisters for lunch and a short shopping trip into the Stitchin Post.
