FMQ 2013 Challenge #5-It's All About Borders with Patsy Thompson

Yes, I posted this quilt yesterday and today I am posting it again. When I started on this quilt I had decided to make it for the Wicked Blog Hop AND this challenge by adding in several small borders and row borders.

I used three of Patsy's designs the quilt. Worms, which I have renamed "tabs" because I put them in the outer border and you can only see half of the quilting which gives it the appearance of a tab on the edge :^)

This is the backside so you can actually see them.
Now the front
And the front with the binding on. See how the design appears different now?

I also used Swirls and Seashells. They don't show up really well like I was hoping, but that's what happens when you do black on black and then a varigated on a varigated plaid!!! Oh well!
Again, the view from the back shows the quilting off much better than the front!!
And the front!!
I think my favorite border is the falling Oak leaves, that was fun. At first I just had a line going through the middle but it needed more. So I added the green veins and now it looks awsome!!!

And I cannot leave out my feathered feline,he reminds me of our Diane Gaudynski feather challenge last year :^) And actually, I think my kitty kind of looks like Diane's cat, Oliver!!! Hmmmmm!!!!!
The kitty and pumpkins and all related pieces are all hand appliqued.

This little gem is now hanging at work, in the Dr's office I work in. We have about 10 providers in the building. I have about 26 quilts hanging in various spots throughout the office. I am so lucky to have such an awesome place to hang my work, and the patients seem to really love it. Warms my heart :^)

Thank you SewCal Gal for giving us the last two years of Free Motion Quilting Challenges. I have grown so much in my skills and have met so many wonderful people along the way who I call friends now. You are a blessing and a gift and I thank you from the bottom of my heart!!! Truly!!!

Take care everyone, Happy Quilting, and keep those scissors sharp!!! Martha

Wicked Blog Hop-Wicked Cute!!!

First, I would like to thank Mdm. Samm for creating this wickedly fun blog hop and Wicked Wendy for being the most Wicked Hostess ever!!!

I have been working wickedly wild on my quilt and hope you enjoy it as much as I do!!!
I have been wanting to do one of these cute cat quilts designed by Helene Knott for a long time, AND, I wanted to make this pumpkin quilt again. So when I saw this blog hop advertised, I thought what a great combo!!! I'm joining in!!!
Here's the patterns I used for this quilt :^)

And here are some closeups of the Free Motion quilting I did on this quilt.

A feathered feline!!
I love the falling Oak leaves!!
Flame grass

I had some leftovers so made a little 10" X 10" mini quilt. Not to be confused with a miniature quilt. This one is just small, not miniature!!!
The little kitty paper piece pattern is by Carol Doak and is from her free online collection!!! Wicked CUTE!!

I hope you have fun on this blog hop!! Be sure to check out the others who are blogging their wicked posts today!!!

Happy Halloween, Happy Quilting and have a Wickedly Wild Wednesday!!!

2013 FMQ Challenge-Libby Lehman Threadplay

I started this piece back in February for SewCal Gal's FMQ Challenge #1. I did not do well on the satin stitching on the flames and put it aside for way too long and recently picked it back up to get it finished up.

We were given the opportunity to watch a program from The Quilt Show featuring Libby Lehman and her amazing Threadplay and Sheer Ribbon Illusions. The technique is fun and amazing!!!! I wish I would have played with it sooner as it is really cool!!!

I first tried just putting a stablizer on the back and stitching without a hoop. WRONG!!! Lots of puckering of the fabric, so I took it all out. Even with the hoop I still have some puckering, but nothing like I had in the beginning!!!

It took me awhile to get the sequence down, but once I did, it was easy and fun!!

In the hoop and once section done
First I used a peach 100wt YLI silk thread and filled in the space
Then I added the dark 50wt Mettler cotton
Then lastly, white 100wt YLI silk
Another section done
You can see that I drew out the design, then stitched the outlines
Almost done

Done with the stitching, now I need to finish the satin stitching and quilting and my husband has his own little Harley Love quilt!!!
Thank you to SewCal Gal to keep giving us the opportunity to work on our skills, learn new techniques and meet some wonderful teachers and quilters along the way. I appreciate all the work you have done for us and the quilting world.

Take care, Happy Quilting and keep those scissors sharp!! Martha

Wednesday W'sIP(works in progress)

G7 Indianapolis

All my pieces cut and ready for construction
I paper pieced the inner strips

I prepared the 1/4 circles for hand applique using my glue stick
In the process of applique
one section done and three to go

 Piecing

And done!!
My next Dear Jane block picked out this morning and ready for cutting!

Also getting back to working on one of the challenges through SewCal Gal. This one is threadplay by Libby Lehman. I watched the video ions ago, so I hope I remember the process. I don't want to sew in a hoop, so I am using this Sticky Fabri-Solvy on the back.
I covered the back completely and I am hoping I can do the free motion embroidery work easily. I will let you know how it works out.

Happy Quilting and have a lovely day. It's time for me to get ready for another really busy work day!!! Take Care and keep those scissors sharp!! Martha

Working with plaids today

I love plaid fabric!!!

Plaid reminds me of fall weather

Not sure why!!
So the quilt I am working on with these plaids is done!! That is, all pieced. Now time to layer and quilt. More to come in about a week and a half!!! :^)

Cooper and his new art center!!

He really enjoyed drawing on it. So glad!!! It will be another activity we can do together!!! And, when he isn't here, a great place to practice free motion quilting and a place to enlarge patterns!! Dual purpose!!
Take Care, Happy Quilting and until later, keep those needles sharp!!! Martha

Wednesday Works In Progress or WIP

I joined the Modern Quilt Guild as an individual and noticed that they were having a Riley Blake Designs-basic Challenge. We all got these fabrics, fat 8ths, free in the mail!!! We have until December to get the quilts made and posted on the MQG site.

I am going to do something super simple because I have way too many WIP's!! Seriously!! I stopped counting at 29!!!
My sketch. I like the way the fabrics look just laying there. So why not leave them be?

So here is their progression. I trimmed each piece up
 Cut two strips 2 1/2 " wide
Cut about 4 inches off the ends of those
 Lined them back up
Moved the pieces according to the drawing
 And continued down the row

Until they were all cut and layed out in order.
Now time to sew them together.
There will be a little more design to this piece. Not sure if this is considered modern or not. I am still feeling a little bewildered with the new modern movement in quilting. I love the quilts I see others doing, but,  I'm thinking that I am so old school that I may not understand the concept. I will find out what the others think when I submit my photo to the group!!

Take Care, have a lovely week, Happy Quilting, and keep those scissors sharp!!! Martha
